CF Update-Cold and Cough:(

Last weekend, we all got a cold, and now we all have a cough:( Poor Lil' Chris coughed his head off all day yesterday. A wet/dry cough. We tried everything...Albuterol puffer, Mucinex, Pulmozyme, Vest, Acapella, manual CPT, Vicks Vapor rub on his chest and feet to help him sleep last night(thanks Nancy for the reminder, I totally forgot we had that:). I felt so bad, he just couldn't stop coughing. At one point I started counting in between coughs to see how high I could count...I only got to 17 seconds:(

Luckily, he finally fell asleep last night and was able to sleep through almost the whole night. Of course, he woke up coughing again though, not as often, but still a lot:( I know the CF clinic won't give him an antibiotic unless he's been coughing for a few days to a week to see if it will go away on it's own, b/c they don't want him to become immune to the antibiotics. So, if he's still coughing by Monday, I'm calling to get an antibiotic. Hopefully his cough will be gone or hopefully the clinic will be good and prescribe an antibiotic ;p

Normally when he gets a bad cough they tell us to up his Vest from 2 times a day to 3-4 times a day...kinda hard when he is in school from 9-3:30. I know some parents who take the Vest to school and do treatments there during lunch or something, but I don't know how he would respond to his class mates seeing him do his Vest. So we will just have to do Vest before and right after school and then right before bed. So that's 1 1/2 hours each day, poor kid. Luckily he has been in good spirits. He goes along playing and laughing like he's not even coughing! I don't know how he does it!! I was coughing a lot at work and it gave me a headache and I felt miserable:( Ayla was the first one with a bad cough and she was put on Azithromycin for 5 days.

Please pray that his cough goes away soon and doesn't do any permanent damage to his lungs. Just yesterday the FDA approved expanded use of Kalydeco for 8 more mutations!! None of them are his mutations, but...this means they are getting closer and closer:) WOOHOO!!! We just need to keep his lungs as healthy as possible until they get it approved for him!!! http://www.cff.org/aboutCFFoundation/NewsEvents/2-21-FDA-Approves-Expanded-Use-of-Kalydeco-for-CF.cfm

I also just got some GREAT news from a fellow CF mom which totally made my day!!! So, despite everything that's going on with Lil' Chris' lungs right now, I have so much HOPE for his future:)

Thanks everyone,
M

Learning About CF & New Drugs for DDF508 & 2 new local CF families

I got some great news and some not so great news...

The great news is that a Phase 2 clinical trial of Kalydeco in combination with VX-809 showed significant improvements in lung function in people with the most common CF mutation(Delta F508), which Lil' Chris is a double Delta F508!! This is it people!!! This could be our answers to pray!!

If you remember me talking about Kalydeco only working for those with mutations G551D which is only 4% of the population, well VX-809 is what helps the DF508's, so with the combination of them both...the possibilities are hopeful!!! :-)

Here is a video that a fellow CF mom put together to help us all understand what these 2 drugs really do...(note, VX-770 is what Kalydeco used to be called)...

Below is what the CF Foundation posted yesterday about this trial...(click here to learn more)

June 28, 2012
A Phase 2 clinical trial of Kalydeco™ in combination with VX-809 showed significant improvements in lung function in people with the most common CF mutation, according to final results announced today by Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc.
Both Kalydeco and VX-809, a CF drug in development, are designed to treat the root cause of cystic fibrosis. Vertex developed Kalydeco and VX-809 with significant financial, clinical and scientific support from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
The 56-day study enrolled 109 people, ages 18 and older, with one or two copies of Delta F508. People in the study with two copies of Delta F508 (the most common CF mutation) who received the highest dose of VX-809 combined with Kalydeco showed the greatest improvement in lung function. Vertex released preliminary results from the Phase 2 trial earlier this year.
Based on these final results, Vertex plans to begin a pivotal trial of the combination treatment in people with two copies of Delta F508 in early 2013. Pivotal trials typically aim to gather data that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) could use to decide whether to approve a potential drug.
“The improvements seen in lung function are very encouraging, and we are pleased that Vertex plans to move forward quickly with a pivotal trial,” said Robert J. Beall, Ph.D., president and CEO of the CF Foundation. “We still have significant work ahead of us, but the entire CF community can take pride in its role in making this important step possible. We thank the trial volunteers and their families, clinicians and scientists, and our dedicated volunteers and donors across the country.”
Participants with one copy of the Delta F508 mutation also showed improvements in lung function, compared with those who received a placebo — though smaller than the improvements seen in those with two copies of Delta F508. Vertex said it plans to conduct additional studies of Kalydeco and VX-809 in those with one copy of Delta F508.
About 50 percent of people with CF in the United States have two copies of the Delta F508 mutation; an additional 40 percent of people in the United States have one copy.
The FDA approved Kalydeco in January 2012 for people with the G551D mutation of CF ages 6 and older. About 4 percent of people in the United States have the G551D mutation.
People with CF and their families who have questions about the Phase 2 results can contact Vertex Medical Information at 1-877-634-8789.

Isn't that GREAT news!?!

Now for the not so great news... I recently found out that there are 2 more kids that have gotten diagnosed with CF in our area:'(

One is a cute lil' 9 year old boy. I first found out about him through The Faithful Little Cupcake facebook page. They posted a pic of him doing his Vest while eating one of their yummy cupcakes. So of course I asked if he had CF once I saw the Vest, and of course asked...does he live in Wooster? Then just a coincidence that my friend Stacy A. with Broncheictasis (a lung disease similar to CF) was at a pool party and found out that there was a child there with CF. She of course then talked to his mom and let her know that she could not be near him since she has cultured Pseudomonas. She told his mom about me and surprisingly she already knew about me! She called me "The Famous Michelle who does the CF walk" or something like that :) LOL!! So she requested to be my friend on Facebook and I'm so glad so I can help her out :) Come to find out, she is the same mom from the Faithful Little Cupcake page! Small world:)

The other one is a little girl who was born a couple of months ago. Her sister was in Lil' Chris' preschool. When she was born, they thought there was a mix up with the results b/c the parents aren't CF carriers. The sweat test came back positive though and they are starting treatment today. The parents are going to get re-tested. A girl I used to work with and used to babysit for us, Michelle V., was the one who told me she has CF and recommended I be her friend on facebook. I had no clue who it was until I went to her page on facebook. Since school let out, I've been wondering if she ever got the sweat test done and what the results were. I'm glad Michelle put us together so I can help them out the best that I can.We started Lil' Chris' treatments at just 2 weeks old, so I know what it's like to try to feed an infant with CF and do manual CPT.

I wish these families all the best and I promise I will not let up on finding a CURE!!! I do all this fundraising not just for Lil' Chris, but for ALL current CF families and ALL future CF families!!! WE WILL MAKE CF STAND FOR CURE FOUND!!!

BTW, all my local CF moms who are probably panicking right now...the little boy above is home schooled :) For those who don't know, schooling is so hard for CFers. It was a big decision for us with Lil' Chris. CFers can't be near each other, b/c of cross-contamination, they could spread the bacteria's in their lungs to each other. A nonCFer can't catch it, but to someone who has another lung disease it can be very dangerous. For example, you don't want an older CFer around a younger CFer in fear that the younger one would catch the bad bacterias that the older one has accumulated over the years.

For Lil' Chris, we had to make a big decision b/c the local public schools had CFers at each one and the one school that didn't...well, it's very old and full of mold which is not good either for a child with a lung disease. So we decided to send him to the local Christian School. Honestly, I'm glad, b/c I've always wanted my kids to go to a Christian school, b/c I loved going to a Christian school as a kid and I don't think I would be the same Christian I am today if I didn't. There are no CFers at this school, but the sister of this newly diagnosed baby girl will be going there. She will be in the all day Kindergarten and Lil' Chris will be in the half day Kindergarten, so next year they will probably be in the same class. We thought we would start him out slow, plus it means one more year of possible less germs to catch, oh and we totally fell in love with this teacher! She knows some friends with CF, so she is aware of how being germs cautious if very important. Anyway, even though they will be in different classes this year, we will still have to be careful that our 2 CFers don't get too close. They say 3 feet is ok, but I've just tried to always keep him far away from any CFer to be safe. So we'll just have to be extra cautious if we go to field trips together or something.

We got back his last throat culture results and it was the same as usual...Staphylococcus areus sensitive to Oxycillen(MSSA). No changes in treatment. YEA for no bad bacterias!!! WOOHOO!!

Here is a pic of Lil' Chris doing his Vest and holding a pic of his buddy, Spencer, who is serving in the Army right now and was in the Daily Record Newspaper the other day:) GO SPENCER!!

Please continue to pray for good culture results and good lung function and please keep the above new CF families in prayer. They are going to need the strength! Also, don't forget about Phennyman, he is in need of surgery. Lil' Chris' cousin Nathan with Leukemia is visiting from NJ right now and he is doing GREAT!! Praise the Lord!! Thanks so much for all your prayers!

1st PFT Video / CF Update

Lil' Chris' CF clinic visit went VERY well!! His appt was Wed 8/24/11 and he did his very first PFT!!!! I was soooooo proud of him!!! We were told that he wouldn't do these Pulmonary Function Tests until he turned 5 or 6, but I guess they thought he could handle it now?!?! Either that or it was just an excuse to get him out of the room so that they could ask me questions about his eating habits and such. I'll admit...I was VERY disappointed I did not get to go with him to do his first PFT;( I tried to, I told them I wanted to take pics, but they said they wanted to talk to me not my husband. Oh well, there is always next time, since he will be doing this test EVERY CF clinic visit for the REST OF HIS LIFE, which is every 3 months.

Anyway, while he was doing his PFT, I was talking with a specialist. She asked me lots of questions about what he eats and what he does when we try new foods with him(spits it out). She said to encourage him to eat more and try new foods, we should praise him and give him a reward or something. I told her we already do that. That was basically all it was. I don't think I needed to miss his PFT for something I already knew. Oh well!!

You know....I always dreaded him having to do a PFT, but it wasn't so bad! He seemed to really have fun with it, since they have kid games associated with it. He had to blow up the hot air balloon, roll the ball in bowling, and blow out the candles on the computer screen, all just by breathing out really really hard and long! In the video, you can kinda see the computer screen and Lil' Chris blowing, but it got cut off a little when I uploaded it, sorry:( He kept stopping and taking a breath, but he still blew a 83%! Not too bad for his first time! Hopefully next time will be 100% or more:) Also, PFT's always worried me b/c of the possible cross-contamination, since every CFer in that clinic puts their mouth on it, but my husband said that they put a new mouth piece on for every patient, and the nose piece is always a new one too! Lil' Chris liked playing with the nose squeezer thingy afterwards;-) LOL

Since Lil' Chris did such a good job and didn't cry or anything when they did the throat culture, we took him to play mini golf!! Does anyone recognize the shirts Lil' Chris and I were wearing?? We got them from Josh at "Welcome to Joshland." Thanks Josh for the Awesome shirts, and Awesome CF blog, and Awesome videos that teach lil' kids about Cystic Fibrosis!!! (Click on that last blue line and you can watch Moganko do a PFT:) Lil' Chris LOVES watching his videos, b/c they contain a puppet to make it fun, named Moganko!! Plus, Josh is pretty hilarious too:)

His last CF Clinic visit was 5/18/11 (3 months ago) ......

Weight was 38 lbs. 6 oz .........now it is 38 lbs. 8 oz :( wish it was more, but dr. didn't seem like it was so bad since he keeps getting taller.

Height was 42 inches .........now it is 42 3/4

BMI was 47 % .................now it is 44% again, the dr. said this was still good since he keeps getting taller.

I was hoping for better results, but I guess I won't worry too much if the dr. isn't too worried about it. I'm still going to try to feed him as much as possible and get as many calories in him as I can. I asked the dr. if there is a certain amount of calories he should be eating every day, but she didn't really give me certain number. She asked what he was eating and then said to switch fruit snacks for snack to oreo's or another high calorie snack. By doing this, it could add a couple hundred calories per week, but he LOVES fruit snacks and isn't a big fan of oreo's, he does love chips though!

I just emailed the clinic to find out what his throat culture was, b/c he has been coughing quite a bit the last couple of days. Last night he had a hard time falling asleep b/c he kept coughing and coughing, poor thing;( It's kind of a mix between a dry and wet cough. I would say more dry than wet. He was complaining his chest hurt. To help him stop coughing so he could sleep, I gave him 2 puffs of Albuterol and a drink, and did some manual CPT. Today is definitely going to be a 3-4 times a day for his Vest!! I'm praying he didn't catch any bad bacterias. He's only been in preschool for 2 weeks!!! I wonder if he's going to make it the whole year without having to be put on a daily nebulizer treatment?!?! It's not looking so good;(

Thanks to Mary, local fellow CF mom, I went and bought an alcohol free hand sanitizer which is what they use at her CF son's school. She said that the kids use it every time they enter or leave their classroom. His teacher said that it cut down on the number of colds throughout the year, which is GREAT when you have a CFer in the class!! So Mary told me where I could find it, and I went and bought some for Lil' Chris' classroom. It comes with a MSD paper(I think that's what it is called) which basically says it's legal to have in the classroom if a health inspector comes in. His teacher was very receptive to it!! I haven't had a chance to ask her how much they have been using it though. I'll try to remember next time:)

Last night he woke up in the middle of the night throwing up a few times too. Not sure what from yet. My husband thinks maybe from all the coughing earlier, but he was throwing up like he ate some soy protein, which he is allergic to. I would say the hardest thing about Preschool is that I have no clue what he eats for snack! So I'm not sure if he was throwing up from something he ate at preschool or not. I'll have to start hanging around afterwards so that I can ask what they ate for snack, I guess.

Please pray his forceful cough goes away soon and that he won't need an antibiotic!
Thanks,
M

Lil' Chris' First Ear Infection;-(

Last night was a rough night.

At 3:30 in the morning, Lil' Chris came into our room and woke me up, so I put him on the potty and put him back to bed, but he wanted his back rubbed and was acting a little weird. I rubbed his back and went back to bed, and about 30 minutes later he came back into our room, which is unusual. So I put him back into bed, but he started coughing a lot, so I stayed with him and started pounding on his back(CPT) like we used to when he was little(cupping my hand). He kept coughing, more of a dry cough than a wet cough, so I pulled out his old rubber percussor and started pounding on his back. I did that for a little, then I asked him if I could do his chest and sides and he actually said Yes. So I did his chest and sides, but he still was coughing. After a little bit, it got better, so I put him back in bed and then I went back to bed since I had to get up early in the morning.

About 15 minutes later, he came back into our room. This time my husband got up with him so that I could TRY to get some sleep before I had to get up at 6:30 for work. My husband said that he was complaining that his right ear hurt. I think he got up another time after I left for work saying his ear still hurt, so my husband sat on the couch with him for a little bit, then he asked to take a nap...this was probably about 8am;) So he went back to bed and I think got up around 10 or 10:30 when my MIL was there. She called me at work telling me that he was complaining that his ear hurt and that his right eye was a little red. This was the first that I had heard of the ear ache since I didn't get to talk to my hubby before I left for work.

I was a little concerned since he has never complained of an ear ache before, so on my lunch break I called the pediatrician to get advice and she wanted to see him today. So my wonderful boss let me leave work 1/2 hour early to get him there before they closed. She took one look in his right ear and said it's definitely red and that he has an ear infection. I was kinda taken back since this is the first time he has ever had an ear infection. I wasn't sure what to do, since Ayla never had one either. So I asked her lots of questions:) lol

Anyways, he is now on Augmentin for his ear infection for the next 10 days. She gave me a choice of 3 different antibiotics, but I chose Augmentin since I know he likes that one and it usually works for his coughs. He wasn't coughing much today, but maybe this Augmentin will help it not to develop into anything worse;) Hopefully tonight won't be another up and down night.

Please pray his ear infection, cough, and eye thing goes away really soon! The doctor didn't seem to think the red eye was anything. She also said that his lungs sounded clear, so that's a very good sign and a relief!

Thanks for all your prayers,
M

33 month CF Clinic Visit was GREAT!!! YEA!!!

A glimpse into our CF clinic days....

Well, I guess my sleepless night was all for nothing;) Lil' Chris had a GREAT CF clinic visit today!!! His weight was up 2 lbs!!! Yes, 2 lbs in 3 months!!! I couldn't believe it when she said he was 33 lbs!! I thought for sure his weight would be bad, but I guess all those scandishakes REALLY saved us...phewwww!!! His height was 37 3/4!! Wow, he is growing like a weed!! Both his weight and height were in the 75th percentile......that's right.......75th!!! :) I almost dropped to the floor when Dr. K told us that! I don't think he has ever been in the 75th percentile for weight! I'll take it though!!! His BMI was 55%. They like it to be above 50, so we are all good there too:) YEA!!

This visit was awesome, b/c we got to tell Dr. K that he can do some great new things:) I think he was very impressed when we told him that Lil' Chris is potty trained(except for night time), and that he can take 3 whole enzymes all at once with liquids!! YEA!!

Can I just tell you how AMAZING my son is?! He wore his mask the WHOLE time in the hallway to our room, and then the WHOLE time during getting measured and weighed in the hallway, and then the WHOLE time afterwards to the car!!! I was shocked!! I know I practiced it with him a couple of days before, but I wasn't really sure if he would do it or not. He didn't even give us a hard time about it!! He was such a good boy! As we were walking down the hallways...I was walking behind him and just started tearing up I think for different reasons....
  1. I was SOOOOOOO PROUD of him! I couldn't have been ANY prouder!
  2. He is getting so big.
  3. Just the fact that he HAS to come to a hospital EVERY 3 months for the rest of his life, and how this is just the beginning of many, many, many times of having to wear a mask;( ;( ;( I guess it just hit me. We CF parents get that every now and then.

As for all my questions for Dr. K....
  1. He doesn't recommend doing the pill form of Augmentin(antibiotic that we usually use), b/c they are HUGE!! He said they are like horse pills. So, for now we will just stick with the liquid antibiotic. Plus...Lil' Chris LOVES the taste of it;) It's like a special treat for having a bad cough;) LOL That shouldn't be funny;0
  2. The bumps on his arms could be the start of eczema...that stinks.
  3. He hasn't heard of the white palms thing being related to CF. Still not sure what it is.
  4. I got our paper for CF Services Pharmacy filled out...does anybody else use them, they give a percentage to the CFF for a cure?? If you go to www.CFServicesPharmacy.com you can print the coupon for each of your 4 visits(once every 3 months) throughout the year, and then you will be entered to win a $50 gift card for each entry....and then a $100 gift card if you go to all 4 visits and get the coupon filled out each time:) I think it is a GREAT incentive to help make sure that no CFer skips any visits just b/c they are feeling good at that time. It's still important to go every 3 months!!
  5. Hang onto your seat folks, b/c here is some GREAT news.........Lil' Chris is getting the new Blue Vest!!! YEA!!! It is machine washable!! It has an outer shell that can come off and can be washed in the washing machine!! Where was this thing when Lil' Chris was 11 months old???? At least the new CF moms will have it :) He is upgrading to the Medium. He measured at 22 inches, and the medium starts at 23 inches, so they said we can try it and he'll grow into it:) They said to give the old one away or just throw it out.
It was sad saying goodbye to Dr. K;( He was the one who told us that Lil' Chris had Cystc Fibrosis. I think he is like the only person I have ever cried in front of. He was a sweetheart, and handed me some tissues. That's got to be a rough job telling a family that their kid has a life threatening disease. He did a great job and was there for us every step of the way answering all my million and one stupid lil' questions;) "Thank You, Dr. K for taking such good care of our Lil' Chris!! Good luck with your move!! We'll miss you, it won't be the same without you!"

So another good visit under our belt. Dr. K said we are doing a great job and to keep up the great work! He doesn't want to change any meds or anything....YEA!!! Praise the Lord!!

Our next visit is the BIG ONE...the annual visit!! Dun dun dun....;) lol It is usually always near his birthday, so this year it is on June 16th. He will have to get blood work, x-rays, throat culture, and the works, and we are usually there for 3-4 hours!!! The nurse said today that the kids there don't usually do PFT's until they are about 6...so we got some time there;) I don't think I'm ready for those yet;-) lol

Thanks for all your prayers, and for all your continued prayers for Lil' Chris to keep going in the right direction:) I'll let you know what the throat culture result is when I find out.
M
PS. He finished his Augmentin and his cough is completely gone...Hooray!!! :)

500 Hours on the Vest!!!

Lil' Chris started his Vest when he was just 11 months old(3 months younger than what Ayla is right now...hard to believe he was that little and doing his Vest). My hubby dug up some old pics of the first time Lil' Chris did his Vest. He looks so little!! Where did the time go???? Now, 22 months later...he has been sitting like a good lil' boy(most of the time;) for over 500 HOURS!!! I give him A LOT of credit for all that he does for such a lil' dude!!

Here is a montage of some lil' fun photo sessions we've had;)

  1. His first time using the Vest at home(the instructor was actually there teaching us how to use it, but I didn't get a pic of her;)
  2. Me trying to get a good pic for 2010 fundraising. Don't worry, he didn't get hurt falling off the machine;)
  3. Lil' Chris, Mommy, and Daddy having fun during a night Vest treatment(I like to tickle him when he is on his Vest...he just LOVES it;) lol He had sooooo much fun taking Mommy and Daddy's pic!! ;)
  4. Video of him doing his Vest yesterday while eating a Go-Gurt and standing on one hose;) He loves to snack while he is doing his vest. We were going to try to put video of him doing his Vest on the commercial, but couldn't figure it out...maybe next year:)

Have a great day! Don't forget to keep Eva's family in your prayers.

FOX 8 Kalahari Contest/Update/CPT

Guess what??? I just submitted an entry to a Kalahari Contest that FOX 8 News is doing!! I really hope we win!! It is for 2 days at Kalahari Resorts Sandusky....we all know Lil' Chris LOVES Kalahari, even though he has only been there once;) If you would like to submit too, go to fox8.com. It is only until 11/1 so hurry!! There are going to be 15 winners!! I think it's awesome that they are doing this and I hope that some really deserving people win it. Now if only they had a Disney Contest....;-) I'm still determined to take Lil' Chris to Disney no matter what it takes! Some Christmas ideas....Disney bucks or just money to go to Disney:) Thanks.

I just put a link to the Kalahari video post up top of this blog, b/c he asks to see it EVERYDAY and I got tired of searching for it each time. Now it will be nice and easy to get to:)

Ronnie and Christina had a great post the other day on their blogs about CPT(Chest Physical Therapy: what we used to do to Lil' Chris before we got the Vest). I would show you a video of us doing CPT to Lil' Chris when he was a baby, but I don't think I ever took any, b/c it was too depressing. I didn't want that memory...it was a hard time for my husband and I to have to pound on our lil' baby like that. I thank God everyday that we were fortunate enough to get the Vest for Lil' Chris. It has made all of our lives soooooo much easier! Click here to see his last Vest video, and click here to see Ronnie's post about CPT and he also included Christina's post:) In Christina's video...I think it is around 13 minutes in that it shows her doing CPT on her son(what we used to do). Just watching it brought back all the memories of my arm killing me!!!

Update on Lil' Chris' cold....it is all gone, even his cough thankfully.....but unfortunately Ayla's nose started running yesterday:( I'll keep you posted.

Good news....we raised $200 for our first month of doing Jeans 4 Genes at work!! YEA!!! 3 more months to go, if we keep this pace up, that means we will raise $800 for a CURE for CF!!! Praise God!

We can't wait for Nov 12th, we are going to the 2nd Annual Volunteer Appreciation Reception which honor's our chapter's outstanding volunteer leaders with Robert J. Beall, Ph.D. as the special guest. He is the President & Chief Executive Officer of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. We are going to hear about the latest scientific advancements and progress we're making in the fight against Cystic Fibrosis. I'll share any good info I get;-)

Have a GREAT day!

2nd Annual CF Clinic Visit 7/8/09

Today Lil' Chris had his 2nd annual CF clinic visit at the Children's Hospital. He was such a good, brave lil' boy!!! He got his first hospital bracelet and he got measured and weighed on the big boy scale!!!

As soon as we got there, they made us go get his lab work done, b/c we couldn't do it before hand like they had wanted. He of course did not like that part, but what kid would like getting pricked with a needle? Luckily they got the blood on the first try, thank God!

Then we went back to the clinic and waited for all of our visitors. First came our Physical Therapist. She asked if he does well with the Vest and I said he does GREAT with the Vest! Then she asked if he ever coughs afterwards or during the Vest treatment, and I said no not usually. She was a little worried about that since the Vest is designed to break up the thick, sticky mucus so that it can be coughed out. She suggested that we try to get him to cough after each treatment or in between frequency changes. Oh yeah, she also changed our settings. We now have to do it for 30 minutes 2 times a day instead of 20 min. 2 times a day. She is keeping the pressure at 4, but adding a 10 min. session at frequency 10. We used to do pressure 4, frequency 12 for 10 min. and then frequency 14 for 10 min. Now we do pressure 4, frequency 10 for 10 min. then frequency 12 for 10 min. and then frequency 14 for 10 mins. This is how she explained the reasoning to us....

Think of your lungs as a tree... frequency 10 breaks up the mucus in the trunk of the tree to be coughed out. Frequency 12 breaks up the mucus in the branches of the tree, which goes into the trunk of the tree which can be coughed out. Frequency 14 breaks up the mucus in the leaves which goes into the branches, which goes into the trunk which can be coughed out. That's why it is important to start with the smaller frequency and work your way up to the higher frequency. You basically are making a clear path for the mucus to be coughed up easier. Makes sense!

She then did tests with him to see if he could stack blocks and point to pictures and say what they were and so forth, but he was just acting shy and didn't want to cooperate. I knew he could do some of the stuff, but I also knew he wouldn't do it for her in a new environment. There were too many new things in the room for him to explore. We'll have to work on that I guess;-)

Then our CF doctor came in and pretty much right away said he needed some Augmentin for his cough. I told him how for weeks it would come and go and then once this cold hit, the cough hit him harder too. He's been coughing the most today. So now he is on Augmentin for the next 20 days...2 teaspoons 2 times a day.

The dr. said that his lungs sounded "clear as a bell!" THANK GOD!! He is going to keep him on the 15mg of Prevacid Solutab once a day and 2ml of Vitamax once a day. The only other big change is that he is switching his enzymes from Creon 5 to Creon 6. Apparently they are going through some big changes and won't be making the Creon 5 anymore. He will still be taking 3 with every meal and snack though. I asked him if it was ok to take enzymes with a spoonful of dairy products and he said it's fine, but I always heard otherwise, so I might just play it safe and not do it. I know that when I take my lactaid pills with a spoonful of ice cream instead of water, I always get a stomachache. I also asked if he needed enzymes for small snacks like a lil' bag of fruit snacks or a lil' drink of milk and he said yes. That was a controversy between my hubby and I. It still is apparently. My hubby said I should have asked if he needs them for a couple of bites of something, like a couple of gold fish crackers or a couple of bites of our food to taste it to see if he likes it. I still say it's better to be safe than sorry and just give him the enzymes first. This seems to be the hardest thing for us, b/c sometimes when we are out with friends or family and they are giving their kids snacks and ask if Lil' Chris can have some, I always hesitate and my hubby always says it's fine if it's just a few. Will it ever get resolved? Eventually I guess when Lil' Chris starts noticing if he gets a stomach ache from it or not.

The dr. also did a throat culture. I'll let you know the results when I get them. Lil' Chris also had to get a shot in the leg today:( He did not need to get chest x-rays this time since it is done every other year when they are this small. Oh yeah, I also asked the dr. if there is any type of cold medicine that we can give Lil' Chris since he has a cold right now. He said NO! All they do is dry up the mucus, and for Lil' Chris it will make his mucus like cement. Then it will be even harder to break up and cough out. I also asked if dairy products aren't good when he has a cold, and he said it's fine and it's just a wives tale.

The dr. said that his weight gain was not where they would like it to be, but never told me what it was nor his height. I was going to ask, but you know how that goes...you move onto another subject and forget to go back to it. I called after our appointment when I realized it again, but they have yet to call me back. I'll let you know when they do. I had a feeling his weight was going to be down since he has not been eating good lately do to being sick:( Hopefully he gets his appetite back soon!!!

Next came the genetics counselor. She didn't really do much since we did our family tree last year. All we had to do was add our precious lil' Ayla to the tree;-) Then came the Dietitian. She also was not pleased about his poor weight gain. She asked lots of questions about what he will and will not eat. He'll eat cereal, hot dogs, lunch meat, cheese, but no mac n cheese or pasta or bread or eggs. She didn't seem to mind that we still give him baby food after seeing that he doesn't eat too much. I guess she figures the more calories the better, same as us:) She wants us to try salsa with him and fish sticks too to see if he'll eat either. She does want him to try a new drink called Vital Jr. from PediaSure. Now if you guys recall, PediaSure has made him sick in the past. This stuff doesn't say it has "Soy Protein," so I guess we will give it a try and pray he doesn't start throwing up for 3 hours straight like all the other times we have tried any supplements. These drinks are 8 oz. and have 237 calories. I'll let you know how he makes out. She let him try a different drink while we were there to see if he would like it. It was Resource Breeze from Boost. It was in a red juice box with a straw and it was orange flavor. He drank about 1/2 of it down pretty fast, but refused to drink anymore after that. It had about 250 calories. I was surprised for it being like a juice. Hopefully he will take to one of these drinks so we can get his weight back up.

She also informed us that we will no longer be getting the Wee Care Program. We were supposed to get it until he turned 3, but they changed it. Wee Care gave him free enzymes and Vitamax. So that's just great that we won't be getting that anymore!!! Not sure how much they are going to cost us. Hopefully BCMH will cover it. I've heard that the enzymes cost about $1 per enzyme. Lil' Chris takes about 15 a day, so for 31 days that means $465.00 and for 365 days that means $5,475.00!!!!! WOW!!! And that's just the enzymes!!!

All in all, it was an interesting day. Since Lil' Chris was SO good at the dr.'s, we took him to a new playground afterwards. He had a BLAST and went down ALL the slides!! Then when we got home, Lil' Chris helped Daddy put together a swing set that one of our neighbors gave us! Wasn't that SO nice of them?! They also gave us a sand/water table and a plastic pool too! Cool huh? Lil' Chris LOVES them!!

You know what the hardest thing for me today was? It wasn't holding my baby down while he was screaming getting his blood work or throat culture or shot done. It was letting my baby go. Letting him play with the toys and touch things and be free. My baby is getting so big so fast. I can't protect him like I used to. He wants to be free and explore. All I can do is hold back everything inside me saying "Don't Touch!!" and let him be a kid. This is the hardest thing for me, b/c I just want to protect him and keep him well. But now that he is 2, I feel like I can let him go a little bit. I did my part. The dr.'s told me from day 1 that the first 2 years are the most important. They said if I could keep him as healthy as possible in his first 2 years, the longer he would live. Only 3 colds in 2 years is pretty good I think;-) BTW, we sanitized like crazy;-)
His next clinic appointment is on August 5th at 2pm. Usually they want to see him every 3 months, but I guess since he has a cold they want to see him sooner to see if the antibiotic works.
M
PS. His new words are "Bless You" after anyone sneezes or even coughs...too cute;-) And Ayla found her feet today:)

200 Hours on the Vest!

I can't believe my poor lil' guy has had his Vest shaking him for 200 hours already and he is not even 2!! That seems like sooooo much! I wish I knew what it felt like. I'm still to this day amazed that he does it with no problem. He does it like it's nothing! I'm so proud of him, he is such a strong lil' boy;)

He used to like watching the Wiggles every time he did his Vest, but now he likes to watch "Yo Gabba Gabba" when he does it. While we put his Vest on him, he says "Gabba? Gabba?" His new favorite episode is the one with Jack Black. It's hilarious, even Chris and I enjoy that one;-)

For some reason, the Vest seems to calm Ayla! She could be crying, then we put Lil' Chris on the Vest, and all of a sudden she stops crying! Then when the Vest is done, she goes back to crying again! It so funny;-) She could even be upstairs and this works! lol

I hope you enjoyed the montage,

First Vest Video's

Here are the vest video's that my husband took the first night with the vest. I had to work that night, so I missed his first time using it without the trainer or doctor's help. So he tried to get some good video for me(thanks honey:)
Sorry they are a little dark, but as I've said before, we don't have very good lighting in our living room. Chris tried to use the light from the video camera the best he could.
It's so funny how he was trying to make him laugh;) His lil' shaky voice is so cute!

A Better View of The Vest

Here are some pics of the Vest. I hope this helps you to understand what it looks like a little bit better. The shoulder straps are velcro, so he has lots of room to grow. The buckles are adjustable too. The hoses are nice and long so he can play with his toys. So far he just sits still. I know that won't always be the case though:) The hoses are neat, b/c they are interchangeable. All the ends are the same, so it doesn't matter which end you plug into the machine or which end you twist onto the vest. Love it!! There are 4 air holes. 2 under each side where the hoses attach.
So far we LOVE the vest! He has been doing great! It sooooooooo nice not to have to pound on him anymore. It always broke my heart when he would cry. I'm so glad we don't have to go through that anymore! I'll post some video that my husband took last night with the vest later.
Enjoy!

"First Time with Vest" Pics

Here are a couple vest pics. We didn't get too many, b/c the trainer was there. We'll get more later, and maybe some video. It's so cute when he tries to talk(make sounds). His voice just vibrates. He didn't seem to mind the vest at all! I just tried to keep him occupied with some toys. Before the trainer came, I let him play with a lil' pig toy that vibrates. I kept putting it on him to get used to something vibrating on him before we put the vest on. Not sure if it really made a difference or not, but he had no problems with the vest! He did it for 20 minutes non-stop! And he didn't cry once! What a good boy!
His prescription is 20 minutes 2 times a day(morning and night), his frequency is between 10-14 Hz, and his air pressure is between 4-6. The trainer has us do the first 18 minutes at 14 Hz frequency and the last 2 minutes she gradually decreased it going from 12 to 10, while keeping the air pressure at 4 the entire treatment. I will talk more about what the frequency and air pressure mean in a later post for those of you who do not know.

The Vest is All Ordered!

I just got off the phone from ordering the Vest, YEA!! She said it should be here in about 1 week. We are going to do a 30 day trial to see if we like it. They are going to send out a Rep. to show us how to use it, but from what everybody tells us, it's not that hard. I called a couple of CF moms in the area to get their advice before we made our decision.

We decided to go with The Vest by Hill Rom. It is the one that has been around the longest, and Hill Rom is the brand that most Hospitals use for their equipment. The Hill Rom also just came out with a brand new model-105. It is a smaller unit, has hoses that will pop right off if need to, has a remote, and comes with a neat carrying bag on wheels. It has a lifetime guarantee, will replace any parts if they break, and will send you a bigger vest for no extra charge when needed.
His chest right now is 18 inches, which is the smallest it can be for the Vest. So, Lil' Chris just made it, thank God! Another reason we went with the Hill Rom, is that when his chest is 23-25 inches, he can get the Chest Vest by Hill Rom. In their latest studies, their breath test(I think is what she called it) has had higher scores when the Chest Vest is used rather than the full vest. There are still tests being done as to which frequency setting works best too. The 2 different vests have different frequencies(which is the speed of compression).

What is The Vest? It is an Airway Clearance Technique. Instead of having to do manually physio therapy and pound on his chest, back, and sides, he would wear this vest that would do all the work for you. The Vest is hooked up to a machine that compresses and decompresses air in the vest to make it beat on his chest, back, and sides. The pounding helps clear the mucus from the lungs, to lesson the chance of bacteria building up in the lungs. This reduces the chances of getting lung infections that leads to irreversible lung damage. The doctors will tell us what frequency to program the machine to. The machine saves that program, so we can just start right away each time. The different frequencies make it pump the air slow or fast, soft or hard.

One of the CF moms that I talked to today said that her 4 1/2 year old girl uses the Smart Vest(a different kind). She does it 2 times a day for 15 minutes each. She uses 3 different frequencies at 5 minute intervals. After each 5 minutes, they tell her to cough, then do the next frequency. She can put the vest on all by herself and turn on the machine all by herself. She has had the vest since she was 3. They all LOVE it.

From what the doctors told us from the very beginning, Lil' Chris and all CFers will wear a Vest for the rest of their lives. They will use it 2 times a day for 30 minutes each when they get older, and maybe use it more when they have a cold and need to get more mucus up. Maybe it is just our clinic or state or country that does this, I'm not exactly sure. I'm just glad that we are getting it now, it will make all of our lives MUCH easier:)

For those who read this blog and don't have a vest, I highly recommend asking your doctor. It could add years to your life I'm told. The only problem is that it is VERY expensive, but WELL WORTH IT. They range from about $13,000 to about $16,000. Luckily for us, our insurance and secondary insurance (that our state has), will pay for most of it, if not all of it. So ask about the vest, ask about a secondary insurance, and ask about other ways to get the vest paid for. I was told that the Hill Rom Vest has a program that will cover the cost if you can't afford it. It doesn't' hurt to ask; )

I'll let you know when we get the Vest and how Lil' Chris does with it,
M
PS. HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!! HOPE YOU HAD A GREAT DAY!! I'll post some pics of Lil' Chris all dressed up later ; ) It was so cute!

The Vest! YEA!

This is a video of The Vest by Hill-Rom. Lil' Chris didn't seem to mind it too much. So, that's a good thing. He didn't cry at all!

They tried this one and the other one on him for a few minutes each. I don't know if just that little bit of time did anything or not, but he has been coughing a little today. Not sure if it was from that, or even if that is supposed to happen. Or who knows, maybe he caught something while walking in the halls at the clinic. There was a teenage girl walking in front of us when we first got there, and she kept coughing. Once we noticed that she was going in the same direction(toward the CF part), we stopped to let the air clear a little bit before we walked down the hall after her. Hopefully he didn't catch anything in the air if she did have CF. I think from now on we'll throw a thin blanket over the stroller as we walk around the hospital just in case; )
I've been trying to research the 2 vests all day on-line. I still can't decide. Here are the 2 websites if you would like to check them out. www.respirtech.com and www.thevest.com. Let me know what you think: )M

BIG EXCITING NEWS!

Ok, the BIG EXCITING NEWS is:
Lil' Chris is getting the Vest!!
YEA!!
We were completely SHOCKED when the doctor said "I think he is ready for the Vest!"
My jaw dropped! We weren't expecting to get it for another 7 or 8 months! We were soooooo excited! I told him it is coming just in time, b/c he is beginning to crawl and it is getting harder to do his CPT(manual chest physiotherapy). I asked when we would get it, thinking it might be another month or so, but he said 1 week! My jaw dropped AGAIN! I can't believe the time has come! We were so excited when they brought one in to try the different sizes to see which one fits him. We were taking pictures and video. They all probably thought we were nuts! Oh well, it was his first time with the Vest! I couldn't resist. I'll try to post the pics later.
They tried 2 different machines to see which one we wanted. We have NO CLUE which one to pick. One machine is bigger that the other, but I think the Vest is better on the bigger one. But the smaller machine would be easier for travel. So, I don't know. We signed papers for both, and I am supposed to call after we have decided which one we want. Then they will order it and it will be here in 1 week. Only problem is, we can't decide which would be best for Lil' Chris. We need your help. My husband put a poll up on the right side of the page under Lil' Chris' header picture. If you or someone you know likes one better than the other, please select that one. Leave a comment on here if you like, that way we know why you chose that one.
Thanks for all your help in advance,
M

CF Clinic Visit 5/7/08

Our visit went really well. We were there for about 2 hours. All the doctors were really impressed as to how well he is doing and how well he is growing. He is just under 21 lbs. and is a little over 28 1/2 inches long! The CF doctor said that he is growing so fast, that we have to keep up with him, so he upped his enzyme intake from 2 to 3 enzymes with every feeding. And since he will turn 1 before our next visit, he told us to stop giving him salt when he turns 1 and to up the Vitamax from 1 ml to 2 ml once a day. Other than that, they gave us some paper work we have to fill out and then mail in so we can go over it at our annual visit on June 4th. Wait a minute, he turns 1 on June 6th! So, we do have our next visit before his birthday! But maybe they don't do a check up at the annual visit. I don't know. I guess we'll find out next month. That's about it. It went very well, and Lil' Chris was so good the whole time :)
Oh wait a minute, there was one other exciting thing ...

CPT Comments from Daniel's Mom

I thought these were such great comments from Daniel's Mom that I decided to publish them as 1 post so nobody will miss them...

Daniel's mom here. Susanna - M was right, Daniel was on the feeding tube for 6 months. It made a huge difference in getting his weight up, and getting his minerals and vitamins back in balance. He was around 12 lbs when he was admited to the hospital and part of that was water retention. Dnaiel was 34 lbs at his check up earlier this month. I found the hardest time to get him to gain weight was 1 year to 2 years of age. At 2, he finally got interested in food, and hasn't looked back! It sounds like your daughter's weight is doing great. Congrats on your daughter's clean culture. Daniel had psudomonas last winter, and it is such a relief when the culture is clean! M- your fundraising is going great! It is so neat that you have a company this is so supportive. Let me know how the walk goes. Two kids are in bed, now to get the 9 year old going!Daniel's Mom

M- okay one more quick comment before I get S to bed. My husband and I also found this frustrating. We did the same kind of CPT with Daniel when he was that age. It is so hard to know for sure if you are doing it "right" I always used the rubber cups, but my husband used his hands. It looked like he was playing the drums. Another 6 months or so, and you should be able to get Chris the vest. I know Daniel was around 18 months, and you know how much I love it!Daniel's mom

CPT

Lil' Chris' cough is MUCH better now. It is almost all gone. Thank you Lord! He is on his 2nd bottle of Augmentin. Only one more bottle to go! Surprisingly, he is taking it quite well still.

I can't wait to go to our 1 year visit in June to learn all kinds of stuff, esp stuff about CPT(chest physio therapy). I love our CF clinic, but there is always one thing that surprises me every time we go. The doctor asks how we are doing the CPT, he writes it down, and that's it! No, "Ok, but try this since he is getting older, or we'll have the Physical Therapist here next time you come just to make sure". I'd kinda like some reassurance that we are still doing it right! He is MUCH bigger since the last time we saw the PT. He was only 6 week old at that time when we first started the CPT! Now he is sooooooo much bigger! I really feel like he may be missing out.
Here is what we do every morning and night when he lays on the changing table...
-with our cupped hand...left front chest and left side at the same time for 2 minutes.
-then flip him, and do right front chest and right side at the same time for 2 minutes.
-then put him on his belly and do 2 minutes on his upper back with cupped hand, or rubber thingy.
Lately, if I use the rubber thingy, I've been using 2 at the same time to get both sides. That's not the way they taught us, but I have a feeling that it is better for him.
Did anybody else do anything differently? I'd love to hear some advice.
Thanks,
M

Good Morning

Sorry I haven't posted in a couple of days. I have off today, so I can do lots of posts (Lil' Chris willing, of course =)

Lil' Chris has not been feeling good the last couple of days. Not sure why. Maybe he is coming down with something or maybe he is starting to teeth, I don't know he is my first baby. I'll blog more about this later today. Right now I'm starving and I gotta eat before Lil' Chris wakes up. I find it much easier to get him up in the morning and do his CPT when I have a full tummy. If I don't, I can't wait til it's done and his feeding is done so I can eat. Plus, I tend to rush through it with no fun. I like to have fun with his CPT to make it seem not so bad. I try to sing and dance to get him to laugh and take his mind off of it. If I'm starving, I just don't have the energy to do all that and then he ends up crying through it all and trying to turn and get away and push my hand away. That's no fun for both of us. So, I'll go eat some breakfast, get him started for the day, and then I'll blog some more later : )

CPT

Am I an awful cf mom? Lil' Chris went to bed at around 6:30pm tonight. He usually just takes about an hour nap, wakes up, eats, plays a little, and goes back to sleep for the night usually around 8:30pm or 9:00pm. Except, tonight he didn't wake up! He just kept sleeping! He did have a very exciting day. He started crawling (by crawling, I mean rolling) all over the living room floor while I was Instant Messaging D. He found Daddy's PlayStation and started playing with the remote! It was sooooo cute!! I had to take a picture. I'd share it with you, but I can't seem to find the thing to connect the memory card to the laptop. Sorry : ( When I find it, I'll share the pictures with you, I promise!
Anyway, I didn't get to do his CPT! That's what we call the pounding on his chest, back, and sides (chest physio therapy, I think :). I usually do it after his 6:30pm nap, but he never woke up! Should I have woken him up? Or do I let him sleep? Is missing his CPT one time going to really hurt him? I don't know. I hate to wake him. Maybe I'll just do it 3 times tomorrow instead of 2 times. Would that even make up for it? Who knows. This is the kind of things a new cf mom deals with I guess. I'm glad that I have this blog now and can ask those who have gone through this kind of thing before. Please let me know what you would do or did.
Thanks in advance,
M
